Research: Playing “Noita” and “For Hexposure”

In the morning, I played two magical games to better understand what is enjoyable in games about magic.

“Noita” is a rogue-like where you are a spellcaster, finding new wands and potions that interact differently with the environment. In this game, the most appealing part to me was finding a new thing and testing it out on the environment. The exploration and experimental aspect was the best part about the magic in this game. The magic didn’t necessarily feel magical, thought. But it did get me curious and addicted to the game.

In “For Hexposure”, you brew potions for your customers. It was completely different and not the experience I’m truly going for, but it felt like a good game loop and good way to deliver the narrative, and it was quite relaxing and wholesome to play. The magic system of potion brewing itself didn’t feel too magical.

So I need to find a game where magic feels magical.
