As expected, I am in need of more scoping down. I have realised I probably don’t have enough research. Well, at least I don’t have enough focused research. To have a focused research I would need a focused research question. As it turns out, currently, my honours seems to have many research questions competing each other. I’m going to list them out with the different themes, and talk a bit more about pros and cons and how the pieces are dependent on each other in the current design.
Theme 1: Locative Gaming
Why?
- I want my honours project to make people walk around Dundee. This needs locative gaming research, as I cannot/will not code in GPS (I want to focus more on the writing and storytelling instead).
- With the game where people walk around Dundee, I will be able to leave it to University so that the new students may use it. I love this idea of being able to impart some comfort to newer students, especially keeping the international students in mind.
- I could monetise this and get funding for it. I would love to work on these kinds of projects in the future more.
Why not?
- I don’t have that much research on this yet
- Locative gaming is not as interesting to me as different storytelling methods and magic
- Mobile is not great for a lot of dialogue
- I would need to focus a lot on the locative gameplay aspect, leaving less time for the narrative itself, which is what I want to do the most
Possible research questions
- Using research on locative gaming to get people walking around Dundee
Theme 2: Non-Linear Storytelling (/other purely narrative-related themes)
Why?
- It’s very interesting
- This could easily be made into the mobile game experience later
