The main things I’ve been doing in regards of my honours has been prototyping the game in Unity, talking to people about the landmarks, and scribbling all my ideas down. I also visited McManus, Magdalen Green, The Balgay Park and its cemetery for inspiration and riddle design.
I will start with prototyping, as it’s the flashiest. I won’t include the visits, as it was walking around and taking notes on what to include for riddles.
I now have a lot of the bare bones of the mechanics at least started. I’m not too concerned with game feel at this stage, mostly wanting to have a functional prototype. I also have a github for the game so it’s secured.
I showcased “Dundee Landmarks” functionality last time, but for context I’ll put this here too.
So it seems like an innocent landmark app, where you click on different Dundee landmarks to get more information about them. But…
What!
That is the spirit trying to communicate with you.
You tap on all the bubbles.
And then, when you tap on “I need you to do something”, the game will take you to the first riddle.
The keyboard is custom made, following this YouTube tutorial by Tabsil: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3MT9Tb1juc&t=966s
This way, first of all it works in mobile, and second of all, in the future I can make the keyboard more custom and also maybe have the player have to chase down the keys, if there’s a spirit that doesn’t really want that you get in touch with them.
