I’ve thought about Dundee idea further, and while I won’t proceed much until having talked to the lecturers properly, I want to sit down to put my thoughts down.
I thought that I would make the game for a new student at Abertay, with the goal of getting them accustomed to Dundee and the main landmarks, while showcasing a game that a graduate student can do and utilising my abilities as a writer to create engaging story experience around Dundee.
Additionally, there might be a little bit of behind-the-scenes stuff about making the game to cater to new game design students, or tips provided by me and friends who are also in their fourth year.
The point of the game would be to make a new, confused, scared student in a new town more comfortable, almost like handing wisdom, knowledge, and “it will be alright”s from fourth years to the first years. From Abertay student to Abertay students, also keeping in mind the students that come from afar (like I did). But mostly I would use this framework to tell the story and get people moving and comfortable in Dundee. I might ask Abertay for funding on this project, because I need to pay rent and possibly hire programmer (or additional designer).
This gives way to a lot of thoughts, which I will just list as bullet points here.
- It would have to have some kind of gameplay, which is a challenge as it’s not as much my strong point as writing or art. But this would be so I could talk about the gameplay design and have a kind of razzle dazzle in the game.
- It might include some Abertay lecturers if they give me permission to add them as characters, for fun, and also to get new students accustomed to them
- The main characters could be Abertay students as well maybe
- Wacky fantasy element? To utilise magic research?
- This could be home to the gameplay aspect…
- Using whatever technique the first Dark Souls game used to get the people have the mental map in their heads of the game, but same for in real life in Dundee
- The advice might just be hidden in the dialogues of the game
- The game would not have stuff on adulting as that is beyond scope probably
- Character-driven story, probably a mystery, but something you can have freedom with about the order of when to experience plot points
- There could be different game stages, and different locations unlock for each stage. The pace of the story would pick up as well, depending on the game stage.
- New stage would either unlock from a certain story beat that is always at the same location, or a story beat that is in random location, or only when you unlock all the story point places.
- Some research into Dundee and its history
